Smokey is a Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii) who came to us from a rehabilitator in Utah. Although they were thought to be related to the Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio formerly Otus asio) until the 1980’s, the Western Screech Owl is a similar looking but unique species – an example of convergent evolution. Their ranges have very little overlap, if any, and they have different vocalizations. Western Screech-Owls can be gray, brown or reddish brown in color, but regardless are extremely well camouflaged. They are nocturnal hunters and can be attracted to backyard habitats possessing standing snags and nesting boxes. Nest box plans can be found here on our website.
